Unlocking the potential of the North East visitor economy.
Destination North East England is here to deliver economic growth across our visitor economy.
It is a regional collaboration with an ambition to unlock the untapped potential in the North East of England by developing our regional eco-system, attracting investment and of course supporting industry.
The North East of England was chosen to deliver the first-ever Destination Development Partnership pilot in England, receiving £2.25 million from the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) over three years. This pilot has been the catalyst for the development of an ambitious ten-year plan that will double the size of our regional visitor economy and create a positive impact for our residents and those who call the North East of England home.
Destination North East England operates and delivers across all seven local authority areas, working together to create jobs, develop skills, drive quality, create new experiences, work with the travel trade, support innovation, attract major events and improve the accessibility and sustainability of the sector.
Destination North East England supports the growth of a sustainable visitor economy across Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Durham, and Sunderland.
We have a ten-year plan to double GDP of the visitor economy from £5.2 billion to £10.3 billion.
The visitor economy can make a huge contribution to the regional economy, directly and through the local supply chain.
The visitor economy makes a significant contribution to the UK’s economy and the growth potential in our region is significant.
Our ten-year plan will develop our regional eco-system and could support the provision of more than 25,000 new jobs.
Creating new visitor experiences and products
Our visitor economy is made up of a number of key stakeholders who can influence and play a part in its growth and success.

Through a regional programme of activity, we provide business support to existing and new tourism businesses of all sizes across the whole geography of the North East.
